What are shemales?
The term 'shemale' refers to biological men who have male sex organs but have secondary sex characteristics of a woman. These primarily include breasts that have come about either through implantation or hormone therapy. 'Shemale' refers to men who do not feel that they belong to their original male gender and strive to appear more feminine or to embody a female person.
Shemales are not only characterized by their typically feminine clothing and typically feminine behavior, they often also strive for long-term gender reassignment. However, once sex surgery has been performed, the person concerned is no longer referred to as a 'shemale' but as a 'transsexual'.
Since the term 'shemale' refers exclusively to a person's gender, this term says nothing about their sexual orientation. Shemales can therefore have heterosexual, bisexual or homosexual or other sexual inclinations.
Uses of the term
The term 'shemale' emerged at the beginning of the 19th century and initially had a completely different meaning than today. Until the early 1970s, the term was primarily used as a derogatory term for particularly strong women whose behavior or appearance was strongly characterized by supposedly masculine traits. These included feminists or women who had skills and knowledge that from a social perspective were reserved exclusively for men. Accordingly, for example, women who had technical or manual knowledge were referred to as 'shemales'.
When the derogatory use of the term 'shemales' for women finally diminished in the wake of emancipation, it was primarily gay men who were referred to as 'shemales'. The current definition of the term has only been in effect since 1984. Today it is understood exclusively as transsexual men before their final gender change. However, the negative connotation of the term remains and partially persists to this day.
Diffusion of the term
The term 'shemale' is nowadays mainly used in pornography. In the porn industry, 'shemale' refers to a category of films in which primarily people with male genitals and female appearance such as breasts. In the world of anime and manga, so-called futanari films are also very popular. In these, protagonists who have both male and female sexual characteristics and thus correspond to the definition of the 'shemale' term.
However, within the LGBTQ community, opinions on the term 'shemale' are very mixed. While some people accept it and use it in their everyday life, others oppose its use. Many feel that the term's strong association with pornographic content could tarnish the community's reputation. To this day, the term is perceived as rather pejorative and should therefore not be used to address feminine transsexuals out of respect.
Differences between shemales and other gender identities
Today, the term 'shemale' is clearly defined and can therefore be clearly distinguished from most other gender identities. Nevertheless, there are some terms that are very close to this and can therefore be used almost synonymously.
Ladyboy and Kathoey
A 'ladyboy' is also understood as a biological man with male sex organs and a female appearance, sometimes including breasts. In contrast to the term 'shemale', the term 'ladyboy' primarily refers to shemales from Asia. Another term for Asian shemales or ladyboys is 'Kathoey'.
Femboy
'Femboys' are young men, mostly under the age of 30, who have biologically masculine sexual characteristics but present feminine traits and behavior. Unlike shemales or ladyboys, femboys have not (yet) undergone any hormonal or surgical gender reassignment.
Crossdresser
'Crossdresser' refers to both men who dress or behave like women and women who impersonate men through their demeanor and appearance. There are crossdressers who slip temporarily into the role of the opposite sex, as well as those who assume the opposite role permanently. Reasons for crossdressing are often political or artistic in nature, but can also be an expression of a fetish or sexual preferences.
Transgender and Transsexual
'Transgender' is an umbrella term for all people who do not feel they belong to their biological birth sex. This includes both women who see themselves as men and men who see themselves as women. However, transgender people sometimes reject gender reassignment surgery.
'Transsexuality', on the other hand, is a more specific term that can be subordinated to the term 'transgender'. Transgender people are usually so uncomfortable in their bodies that they undergo sex reassignment surgery using hormone treatments and surgery.
Bigender
'Bigender' refers to people who identify with two gender identities. They usually see themselves as male and female, but other combinations such as male and nonbinary or female and nonbinary are also possible. Identification with different gender identities can occur simultaneously or alternately. A special case of bigender is futanari, a term from the Japanese-speaking world. These are people who have both male and female sexual characteristics.
Xenogender
'Xenogender' means people who cannot describe their sense of gender in terms of the socially accepted concepts of masculinity and femininity or genderlessness. They therefore use other concepts to define their gender identity more precisely. These include, for example, objects, animals, shapes, colors or symbols.
Non-binary gender identities
'Non-Binary' is a collective term for non-binary gender identities - that is, for anyone who does not define their gender exclusively as female or male. Non-binary people are thus outside of the binary, two-part gender order. Accordingly, shemales, but also xenogenders, bigenders, transsexuals, transgenders and numerous other genders are non-binary.
Unlabeled
There are also people who cannot or do not want to define their gender identity or place it in a specific category. These people often refer to themselves as 'Unlabeled'.
